Union Budget 2016-17: what Arun Jaitley did not say about your EPF savings

From fiscal 2017, 60% of your Employees’ Provident Fund after retirement will become taxable, it emerges from Arun Jaitley’s speech

Finance minister Arun Jaitley on Monday spoke about the government paying the employer’s contribution of 8.33% towards the Employees Pension Scheme for those earning up to Rs.15,000 per month.

But he didn’t spell out a major change he has introduced in the Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) which affects thousands of subscribers.

From fiscal 2017, 60% of your EPF after retirement will become taxable, it emerges from the finance minister’s budget speech.

Right now, EPF is 100% tax-free because it is an exempt-exempt-exempt or EEE product, which means it is exempt from tax at all three stages of investing, accumulation and withdrawal.
