Top Five On Friday – Week 35

Top Five Protest Songs

In no particular order. These are all songs that I have in my collection, but I scoured the internet and included their Lyrics below each selection this time … So, if you have the .mp3’s .. you can sing along!

1) Frank Zappa – “I’m The Slime”

by Frank Zappa

I am gross and perverted
I’m obsessed ‘n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little had changed
I am the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can’t look away
I make you think I’m delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin’ out
From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don’t need you
Don’t got for help…no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That’s right, folks..
Don’t touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin’ along on your livin’room floor

I am the slime from your video
Can’t stop the slime, people, lookit me go

2) Doobie Brothers – “Takin’ It To The Streets”

Words and Music by Michael McDonald

You don’t know me but I’m your brother.
I was raised here in this living hell.
You don’t know my kind in your world.
Fairly soon the time will tell.

You, telling me the things you’re gonna do for me.
I ain’t blind and I don’t like what I think I see.
Takin’ it to the streets, takin’ it to the streets,
no more need for runnin’, takin’ it to the streets.

Take this message to my brother.
You will find him everywhere.
Wherever people live together,
tied in poverty’s despair.

Oh, you, telling me the things you’re gonna do for me.
I ain’t blind and I don’t like what I think I see.
Takin’ it to the streets, takin’ it to the streets,
no more need for runnin’, takin’ it to the streets.
Takin’ it to the streets, takin’ it to the streets,
no more need for hidin’, takin’ it to the streets.
Takin’ it to the streets, takin’ it to the streets,
takin’ it to the…

Oh, you, telling me the things you’re gonna do for me.
I ain’t blind and I don’t like what I think I see.
Takin’ it to the streets, takin’ it to the streets,
no more need for runnin’, takin’ it to the streets,
Takin’ it to the streets, takin’ it to the streets,
takin’ it to the streets.
(Repeat and fade)

3) Guns ‘N’ Roses – “Civil War”

(Slash / McKagan / Rose)
Special Thanks Niven / James

“What we’ve got here is failure to communicate.
Some men you just can’t reach…
So, you get what we had here last week,
which is the way he wants it!
Well, he gets it!
N’ I don’t like it any more than you men.” *

Look at your young men fighting
Look at your women crying
Look at your young men dying
The way they’ve always done before

Look at the hate we’re breeding
Look at the fear we’re feeding
Look at the lives we’re leading
The way we’ve always done before

My hands are tied
The billions shift from side to side
And the wars go on with brainwashed pride
For the love of God and our human rights
And all these things are swept aside
By bloody hands time can’t deny
And are washed away by your genocide
And history hides the lies of our civil wars

D’you wear a black armband
When they shot the man
Who said “Peace could last forever”
And in my first memories
They shot Kennedy
I went numb when I learned to see
So I never fell for Vietnam
We got the wall of D.C. to remind us all
That you can’t trust freedom
When it’s not in your hands
When everybody’s fightin’
For their promised land

And
I don’t need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin’ soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain’t that fresh
I don’t need your civil war

Look at the shoes your filling
Look at the blood we’re spilling
Look at the world we’re killing
The way we’ve always done before
Look in the doubt we’ve wallowed
Look at the leaders we’ve followed
Look at the lies we’ve swallowed
And I don’t want to hear no more

My hands are tied
For all I’ve seen has changed my mind
But still the wars go on as the years go by
With no love of God or human rights
‘Cause all these dreams are swept aside
By bloody hands of the hypnotized
Who carry the cross of homicide
And history bears the scars of our civil wars

“We practice selective annihilation of mayors
And government officials
For example to create a vacuum
Then we fill that vacuum
As popular war advances
Peace is closer” **

I don’t need your civil war
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor
Your power hungry sellin’ soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain’t that fresh
And I don’t need your civil war
I don’t need your civil war
I don’t need your civil war
Your power hungry sellin’ soldiers
In a human grocery store
Ain’t that fresh
I don’t need your civil war
I don’t need one more war

I don’t need one more war
Whaz so civil ’bout war anyway

4) Yes – “Don’t Kill The Whale”

(Jon Anderson/Chris Squire)

You’re first I’m last
You’re thirst I’m asked to justify
Killing our last heaven beast
Don’t hunt the whale

In beauty vision
Do we offer much
If we reason with destiny, gonna lose our touch
Don’t kill the whale

Rejoice they sing
They worship their own space
In a moment of love, they will die for their grace
Don’t kill the whale

If time will allow
We will judge all who came
In the wake of our new age to stand for the frail
Don’t kill the whale

CETACEI….

5) Styx – “The Grand Illusion”

Written by dennis deyoung
Lead vocals by dennis deyoung

Welcome to the grand illusion
Come on in and see what’s happening
Pay the price, get your tickets for the show
The stage is set, the band starts playing
Suddenly your heart is pounding
Wishing secretly you were a star.

But don’t be fooled by the radio
The tv or the magazines
They show you photographs of how your life should be
But they’re just someone else’s fantasy
So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because you never win the game
Just remember that it’s a grand illusion
And deep inside we’re all the same.
We’re all the same…

So if you think your life is complete confusion
Because your neighbors got it made
Just remember that it’s a grand illusion
And deep inside we’re all the same.
We’re all the same…

America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition
Get yourself a brand new motor car
Someday soon we’ll stop to ponder what on earth’s this spell we’re under
We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are

Honourable Mentions:

I was debating which ones to include from below and remove from above, but I just figured – heck! It’s my blog .. I can just add the extras’ down at the bottom! So, here are ones that I was also considering, but decided not to make the cut….

6) Alice Cooper – “School’s Out”
7) The Animals – “Sky Pilot”

When I was searching for lyrics, I noticed this page … http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_protest_songs … I wish I had found it before I started picking my songs! After finding little in my own library using generic “war” and “protest” searches, I spent about an hour browsing through my entire library listening to all my tunes 😀
