I was visiting my folks the other day, and popped in to see my dad on the computer. He is not that computer literate, although as a Chartered Accountant he has used many computer programs over the years. His sight isn’t that great anymore, and in fact he is blind in one eye. I absolutely hate watching him on the computer, because he has his screen setting to 800 x 600, and his appearance settings to extra large font. Grrr! You can only see half the world Dad. Even though he has to scroll right to see the rest of the world, he doesn’t bother – because he only uses his computer to do one thing … pay bills.
All my dad uses his computer for is to login my folks’ bank account and see what’s going in, out and to pay bills online. It’s cheaper and you save envelopes and stamps, plus you don’t have to leave the house.
I watched him login and when he started his Internet Explorer, it came to some weird page. Obviously, he must have accidentally set another page to be his Start Page, or some spyware ad tricked him into clicking a page that made this new page he Start Page. So, I mentioned … “Why don’t you set your Bank Login Screen as your Start Page?” .. He had no clue what a Start Page is, or what I was talking about. So, I thought I would ‘blog’ about it!
A “START PAGE” is the webpage you see when you first load or ‘start’ your browser
If you don’t know how to setup your own start page, and have noticed that everytime you open your browser program you go immediately to your favorite bookmark, perhaps you should consider to setup that page as your very own start page. Here’s how to do it:
Go to the page you want to start in your browser everytime. At the top menu, click TOOLS. Then click INTERNET OPTIONS. Then, in the top portion of the GENERAL/HOMEPAGE tab that you are on .. click USE CURRENT.
Go to the page you want to start in your browser everytime. At the top menu, click TOOLS. Then click OPTIONS. Then, in the top portion of the left GENERAL tab, under GENERAL/HOMEPAGE section .. click USE CURRENT.
Go to the page you want to start in your browser everytime. At the top menu, click EDIT. Then click PREFERENCES. Then, in the center portion of the left NAVIGATOR tab, under HOMEPAGE section .. click USE CURRENT.
My own Start Page is at http://my.msn.com – I have configured it to have some links that I may frequently go to, stock quotes of symbols that I might be interested in, the headline news, some scientific news, various technology news, online comic strips, and even my horoscope. Plus, once I am logged in to this page, everytime I open my Internet Explorer browser, I see the words..
“Welcome Back HART and/or YVONNE”
