In the 2012 Manitoba Budget (April 17, 2012), the government basically added this blurb to the top of their “Business and Innovation” list … – Cut red tape for businesses by reducing how often small businesses have to file sales tax. What Does That Mean? Basically, you can see from the Retail Sales Tax (RST) Bulletin No. 004 – originally issued April 2000 – was updated with the highlighted change in yellow in April 2012: Vendors must file a tax return and remit the RST collectable to the Taxation Division. The tax return filing frequency is based on the average [More]
Offline Earnings during the last Decade I have been working out of my home since March 2003, doing both ‘online’ and ‘offline’ work. Basically … whatever works – is my work. Everything I do to earn income is my HBS Management Consultants (HBSMC) business as I am the Proprietor and consider everything to be a division or a subset of this business. Honestly, I don’t really care what I do .. as long as I earn money. If certain aspects of my business needs concentrating on and is producing at the expense of another aspect of my business, I tend [More]

Generally, when I prepare year end financial statements for my clients, I perform either of these 3 tasks: 1) I prepare everything and write up the books at the time of preparation of the company’s year end financial statements 2) I do the monthly accounting throughout the year, and then do the year end financial statements before continuing with a new fiscal year 3) The client has internal or part-time bookkeepers who do the monthly accounting and then I just perform the year end from information supplied to me. One of these part-time bookkeepers on task 3) just couldn’t understand [More]
A lot of my clients ask me all the time if they can destroy their financial records e.g. from 2002 now – since it’s six years ago – and I thought I would post my views what CRA means by the following news release. The following is now available on the CRA Web site: Did you know… That as a general rule, you must keep records and supporting documents, which are required to determine your tax obligations and entitlements, for a minimum of six years? Whether you have electronic or paper records, you may destroy your records earlier than your [More]
Well .. you might be sitting in your rocking chair wondering if it’s still possible to reduce some of your income tax that you will owe for 2008 .. and then look at the calendar and realize that it’s December 31, 2008 now – and time is running out!! EMPLOYMENT INCOME * Deferral of My Paycheque If I were an employee receiving a paycheck on the 15th and the end of the month, I might consider asking my employers to withhold my cheque until 2009. Amounts paid in 2008 are taxable in the year received. Of course, in the scheme [More]
A while ago, I popped an extra $1,000 CDN$ into my paypal account. Although I have posted a few times in this blog about the rising foreign exchange rates here and here, I didn’t think much of the running balance in my paypal account. All I do recall, is that I had about $XXXX dollars in $CDN plus $YYYY in $USD … then October 2008 $ZZZZ revenues in $USD was added to my paypal account .. and for some reason – silly me – I thought $XXXX + $YYYY + $ZZZZ = My Balance! But, I was wrong – as [More]
I didn’t have to take out a bank loan today to fill my car’s gas tank! I shop at Safeway .. and that price includes my 7cents off as a Safeway Club Member .. but, it only took about $45 to fill my gas guzzler car! I think we’ve all noticed that gas prices are going down everywhere, but I thought I would pull out the chart for Winnipeg to see how the prices have been going on around here, since both the Canadian election (October 14, 2008) and the America election (November 4, 2008) Not Much of a surprise [More]

I first placed the Entrecard script on this blog back in January 2008, and as I mentioned back in August 2008 .. I have been trying to keep EC-costs down to allow other EC users to advertise on this site relatively inexpensively. Tomorrow, November 1, 2008, I will stop accepting purchases for daily slots and deny purchases. However, all purchases made today will be honoured and accepted in the queue (I believe that is good for 10 days) where at the end of the period, I will be removing the code. To advertise, click on the “E” on the widget [More]
It was December 2, 2007 since I’ve emptied the “trash” folder in my Eudora program. I remember vividly, because I blogged about it to remind me! Since then – 148 days later .. it would seem that I have averaged 129,199/148 =~ 873 spam trashy emails per day. That’s interesting to me, because everytime I check to see how many emails I received in any given day it is well over 1,100 count. That would seem to me that my filter is routing a lot of other garbage all over the place, or I ignore or there really is about [More]
I work in my home, on the second floor. During the summer, it gets too hot – because heat rises. In the winter, it’s quite the opposite – I’m freezing! We keep our natural gas fireplace on most of the time, and the thermostat is on the main floor. In order to bring heat up to the second floor, the main floor has to either turn into a furnace .. (which, I don’t mind) .. or we have to spend money redoing our heating system and maybe even consider dual furnaces and the like! So .. I have been using [More]

The upgrade to WordPress version 2.3.3 is now complete. I have also upgraded this template as well .. to the new HART-Empire Network template. I will miss the old 1-800-HART template, which (if anybody noticed) was Version 2, and I really liked the old header graphic. So – I shrunk it and placed in the top left “About” box as a momento 🙂 In case you were interested about the color scheme .. I have left PURPLE color theme for and the series of blogs because purple is my favorite color. I have decided to use BROWN color [More]

My father-in-law is Herbert König, proprietor and owner of Corydon Clock Repair here in Winnipeg. He recently turned 73 years old and has been working full time in his leased premises 5-6 days a week, commuting back and forth from his apartment. Other days he was available by appointment only, but sometimes went into the shop to catch up on his work. He is a busy man! On November 7, 2007 at 10:30am in the [More]
It’s hard to believe that we were watching the Football Game here on November 18, 2007 with +10c temperatures (albeit a bit windy that day). However, Winnipeg has been living up to its name as the cold and snowfall has slowly been creeping up on us. * I might have to start wearing socks with my CROCS!

Well .. I’ve got 5 types of folders in my Bloglines filled with RSS Feeds (1) ARTICLES FOR EACH BLOG TOPIC These are feeds of articles that are subject oriented, and affect one of my blog. I might name a folder called “ARTICLES For” etc. There may be searches included for specific keywords that are around the ‘net, or a collection of other people’s sites and other tidbits that helps me blog about that topic. FINALLY! The DNS and nameservers “appear” to have kicked in. This means that my “planned” migration from the June upgrade to a Virtual Private Server (VPS) to the new Dedicated Server plan August 1, 2007 .. has finally been made. I say “appear” because I still do not know for sure. All my reference sites that identify the IP of the address of, say .. THIS blog for instance .. show up as the IP of the old server. Yet, if you can see a message at the top of this post proves that it is on the dedicated server, [More]
I combined my two previous servers (ISP#1 the mega provider and ISP#2 the reseller provider) on June 8th to a Virtual Private Server (VPS) system. Basically, it’s like a quarter of a real server and limits the CPU resources to 25%. Well .. in the past several weeks I have kept reaching these limits and my network was blinking out. Occassionally, you will come to a site of mine and see the old “default Kubrick” blog template. Well – today I have upgraded everything to a dedicated server and things seem to still exist – so, that’s good! I will [More]

Last Thursday, July 18, 2007 .. I received 1187 emails. Now that I’m taking my laptop to the beach, and accessing email using EVDO internet access, I don’t think I need to be wasting time and access downloading all of these emails .. so, I’ve decided to have a new plan for my emails – in case it is using up my 500 MB download limit with EVDO access. * THE OLD PLAN: It was simple, I had only a few good domains that I wanted to use and many specific names for each one .. all my emails were [More]
I received my first EVDO (MTS Mobility) statement today. It is for the period June 29, 2007 until August 7, 2007 – and geesh that screws me up. * Yup. Still at Victoria Beach … There was a craft sale today and naturally we had to go. I made a beeline for the gourmet food mix and meat spices, and my wife makes a beeline for the jewelry. Afterwards, we meet at the artists corner to browse the original artworks, prints and pictures that closely resemble a view from our lakefront cottage. Well .. today there was a picture painted on our neighbor’s deck and the view could have been from our front deck .. we had to have it. But, I didn’t have enough cash on me. [More]
