As an employer, you have to remit employer payroll deductions (usually) every month by the 15th of the following month. Payroll deductions include the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) contributions, the Employment Insurance (EI) Premiums, and the Income Tax deduction for the employee, plus the employer’s share of the CPP Contributions (employee’s CPP x 1) plus the employer’s share of the EI premimums (employee’s EI x 1.4). The deadline for December 2005 payroll deductions to be remitted to Canada Revenue Agency is Monday January 16, 2006 .. because the 15th is a Sunday, they move it forward one day. So, if [More]

While I am very ‘computerized’ in my own business, I still type invoices manually on MS Word, even though I can generate them automatically. I prefer to do that this way, because my invoices look better printed on a colour letterhead of my own making. I then post the invoice into my Time and Billing (T&B) Software program, which keeps track of both my work in progress and accounts receivable. I don’t bother entering my invoices individually into my General Ledger program (which, I usually wait until the last possible minute during Income Tax time – “clients first”), but rather [More]
Today is one of those days … I’m expecting a courier delivery from a client today. It’s a box of my client’s Year-End records that I need and will be working on this weekend. I was asked Wednesday afternoon what day would be a good day to send the box, so I will be at home to receive it. I suggested Friday as I had no plans for the day, but just in case – call me before the courier is sent to be sure that I am home. Well, this morning I had an early meeting with another client, [More]
If you don’t know what “PHISHING” is … click on this link for more information, and to read the rest of the article in the box… Phishing From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Remember “Records” .. and “Record Players” ? Music is my life. I enjoy music. I play music. I listen to music. I collect music. I need music! Life changed for me, slightly, when I got married. I am the type of person that can fall asleep to music, and enjoyed falling asleep to music. My wife, on the other hand, can NOT fall asleep to music, but can fall asleep to the television. Me, on the third hand, have always been a couch potato, so I can’t fall asleep watching T.V. because, no matter how bad the show is – [More]

Well, I was low on business cards anyway… and today I got sick of crossing out my OLD cell phone number and writing my new Cell phone number on the back – So I printed up new business cards. Attention: CANCER PEOPLE (born between June 21 and July 22) …… My birthday is in July and ever since my last birthday I have been receiving daily horoscopes from some person named Jonathan Cainer. Another Telephone Service Rant and Rave …. As I wrote previously .. when my Telus cell phone service came due, I opted to consolidate my second cell phone account with my main telephone company – Manitoba Telephone System (M.T.S.) so .. Goodbye Telus Mobility and Hello MTS Mobility. The second cell phone account now costs me $10.00 on the ‘buddy’ system plus taxes. Before, with taxes, each of my two cell phones services (for myself and my wife) cost about $45.00 each. My Telus phone actually cost $50.00 with the Call display and extended voice mail options, but it was [More]

Something interesting happened this weekend, and I thought I would document it. As you know, I have the blog site 1-800-HART’s Picks where I have joined companies as an affiliate, then I surf their sites for products that even HART would buy (if I had the money) .. then I post them in the blog. In WordPress, there is a plugin called wp-amazon and even another one out there, that makes this quite easy to do. You see – in my options area, I insert my Amazon affiliate-ID and then there is a button here in my area where I [More]
HART’s mind works in mysterious ways …. I have kept a record of every Prime Rate change since January 1, 1986. I guess I’m anal that way. There are many times working on year end financial statements that I have to accrue interest on loan balances. Quite contrary to common belief .. “term loan rates” are not that common for business. Mind you, I shouldn’t say that as if I am making a fact, but rather an observation. Usually with my experience, when there are company loans that involve general security arrangements, I have noted that these loans tend to [More]
Comparing “Net Income” and “Cash Flow” is like comparing “Apples” to “Oranges”. These are two different concepts. You can have a positive cash flow and still lose money. You might be experiencing a negative cash flow but are making money and profits. Sometimes your banker or investor will ask you to prepare a basic business plan and a Pro-Forma Cash Flow. There’s a reason they want to see this Pro-Forma statement. They want to know if you have the ability to generate cash in your business to pay back their loan and/or return on their investment. Except for the desire [More]

It’s that time of year again …. Generally, December 31 marks the deadline for transactions that you can incur that will affect your taxable income position for the year. While tax planning strategies should be considered throughout the calendar year, it is possible to establish some beneficial strategies may reduce your taxable income position for 2005. As November 2005 nears a close, that time is now. Every situation is different. Before you can come up with any Year End Tax Planning Consideration, it is a good idea to just pull out your last year’s Personal Income Tax Return and have [More]
