I prefer to pay cash for all my expenses, because it is simpler for me to keep track of my own expenses, and record them in my own computerized financial statements. I am my own “SHOE BOX” client. Yes – I have a computerized financial statement and G/L set-up for myself. This not only includes my business income and expenses and my business assets, but I also keep track of my non-business assets and other personal expenditures such as: tax deductible items, like interest on investments, medical and donations, etc non-deductible interest and expenses similar to my own business expenses [More]
Ok! These are cool and archived in my “Amusing Stuff” category. I suppose it’s okay to link these “.swf” files in my blog, as people were nice enough to FORWARD them to me! Some of them are cute! Some of the are interesting! Some of the them are silly! Some of them are X-RATED or OFFENSIVE (although, none of them are sexually explicity) and MAY include SWEARING … so, you might want to wait until the children are out of the room 🙂 ** Reader Beware ** You probably have seen most of these … a lot of the links [More]
Well, it’s practically impossible to print a decent article anymore .. especially from blogsites! With all of the graphics, the pictures, the background, the sidebar, the title page and graphic …. * YOU KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT * … am I right? or is it just me?? Well, I found a wordpress plug-in from this site .. GaMerZ.Homepage .. it’s pretty cool. At the beginning of each article, you may now “Print This Article” I think it is a great plug-in to this blog. If you see an article that you like, and want a HART copy, er rather [More]
I needed a little screen capture utility program, and what I normally do is download “trial versions” of programs. Normally, after the 30 days are up I uninstall the program. When I was originally finished using this program however, I did not uninstall it .. I thought it had potential so I just left it as a dormant shortcut on my desktop. When I started the PetLvr.com – [The Blog] and this blog, I thought it would be useful to have a good working screen capture utility, because – let’s face it .. we all like to see some pictures [More]
I am looking for a new logo design that reflects my business, my personality and my websites. I want the new logo to appear at the top of this blog, as well as appear on my http://www.HBSMC.com website pages. The information that I require to be considered for inclusion into any new logo would be: 1-800-HART – My blog title HBS Management Consultants – My business name Hartley B. Singer – Under my business name Both URLs … http://www.HBSMC.com … and …. http://www.1800HART.com (don’t need the “www”) What I think I need is above .. what I think I want [More]
I shop at several places for my office and computer supplies. Grand & Toy – I have a credit card for this store, with a business account and terms, and receive an adequate business rate discount off of retail price. I seem loyal to the Polo Park Shopping Center branch. Their sales reps have always taken the consideration to call me every 2 months to see if I need more supplies, and also faxes me their latest sales fax-flyer to my toll-free Fax line. I have noticed a great difference in using different brands of paper in each of my [More]
This has got to be the best invention since sliced bread .. Post-It “SUPER STICKY” Notes. If you are using only the regular Post-It Notes, or some other branded “sticky-notes” or “self-adhesive removable notes” or like that … you should consider switching to these stickums. I use all types of sticky notes everyday in my business .. the 2″x2″, the 1″x1″, the 3″x3″ and so on and so on. I use them on working papers, I use them to mark pages, I use them to mark the location to sign documents, and up to recently was using them everywhere else. [More]
If you are unfamiliar with the 404 Error message, try doing a net search … or click here. “404 Error Page”,”examples” Chances are that you are quite familiar with the 404 Error message. This happens when you click on a bad link or are directed to a specific URL and that page has been deleted from the host server. Sometimes, if there is no 404 error page, your browser will just hang up a bit, and then you will see a familiar page … perhaps something like this one (click to enlarge): http://www.winnipeg.ca/ThisPageDoesNotExist I’ve been online and with a website [More]

I have, and use three different printers for my business. Today I was reminded that two of them are actually discontinued models, and I thought I would write about it. HP DESKJET 990 cxi Professional Series This is the first ‘production’ printer I purchased. I purchased this for several reasons. Firstly, it is capable of being designated as LPT1. Despite it all, I continue to use software that requires a printer to be assigned, or rather redirected, from the software and not as a part of the Windows printing function. At the time that I purchased this printer, the store [More]
This is basically the design of my own fax cover sheet. Let’s face it .. you need a good fax cover sheet … so, why not use mine? I keep a folder filled with a bunch printed off of my Laser printer, in black and white, and a bunch printed off of my Deskjet printer, in color. I often send faxes to clients who also have all-in-one color printers doubling as their fax machine. Even if they don’t, I always staple the fax cover page to its documents, with a printed acknowledgement generated by my fax machine, and either place [More]
I have added a MOBILE plug-in to this blog, that should allow you to view it on your PDA or Mobile phone. This is the URL that you would have to use to read the 1-800-HART blog on your device: http://www.1800HART.com/blog/wp-mobile.php I personally do not use a mobile PDA or blackberry unit (although I am thinking of purchasing the #7290 version), and I would be grateful if any one of my readers who can access this blog with the above URL to report back to this entry and let me know if it works okay or not … Thanks and [More]

Retirement Compensation Arrangements by Peter Merrick FMA, CFP, FCSI Over the past three decades businesses operating in Canada have found it difficult to provide a worthwhile retirement plan for their top people. A Retirement Compensation Arrangement (RCA) is the Income Tax Act’s retirement planning solution for affluent professionals, business owners and corporate executives. An RCA enables you to supplement your pensions and registered retirement savings plans, while increasing your financial and retirement security. RRSP/pension limitations In 1957, the Canadian government introduced the Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP), on the premise that an annual tax-deductible contribution of 18 per cent of [More]
Individual Pension Plans – Upgrade Yourself by Peter Merrick FMA, CFP, FCSI Incorporated businesses looking to add a benefit for their owners and top executives might want to consider a little known tax-avoidance structure called the individual pension plan. IPPs are a wealthy person’s answer to registered retirement savings plans. They are sanctioned by the Canada Revenue Agency and offer the best tax and retirement savings solution for individuals 40 years old and older who have a T4 income of more than $100,000 and have historically maximized their RRSPs and pension contributions. The existing RRSP legislation was created in 1957, [More]
Financial Planning for Business Owners by Peter Merrick FMA, CFP, FCSI At the beginning of my career in the financial planning industry during the early 1990s, I was very fortunate to meet one of Canada’s most successful self-made businessmen. He was in his late 50’s and had much more life experience than me. He told me that the majority of the investment advisors he met over the course of his career did not have the foggiest idea how to make money that lasted, nor did they understand what successful business people were looking for when they sought out professional financial [More]

This is the creek behind our condominium. I believe it just crested recently. But, yesterday when we were out walking the dogs … the creek was about 3 feet higher than it was today. I thought I should take some pictures before and after. You Might Taking Accounting too Seriously If … You can’t wait to do your own tax return. You think the GAP store at the mall sells accounting standards. You think the CMA awards on TV relate to accounting (CMA is the Country Music Association). You cheer at the Oscars when they announce the accounting firm in charge of the envelopes. You read film credits to identify the name of the Production Accountant. You double underline your mother’s name when preparing her death notice. You do an NPV calculation when you receive an indecent proposal (Of course this makes perfect sense [More]
